There are some “islands” within the salt desert that are colonized by cactus forests. The main ones are the Island of the Fish (Isla Pescao) and Isla Incahuasi, where some tourist services exist. Uyuni can only be visited at dry times since with rains it is not possible to cross it in any way. Most of the photos of this article come from these islands. By all means, there are many more sites to visit in that immense sea of salt if one is attracted by the risk and the adventure. Not to forget the GPS, disorientation are absolute, and leave written up the testament well before starting off.
