   The Genus Strombocactus:

Origin:  North of Mexico, USA (Texas, New Mexico).

 

Plant Description:  About 13 cm of diameter when very adult, forming groups of stems blue-greenish with areolas (plumes) very woolly. It has a stout napiform root.

 

Flowers:  Small, of 1.5 cm of diameter, pink. The stamen reacts and they are contracted to the contact with insects which contributes to the magical legend of this plant. The flowers are developed from the woolly areolas of the apex of the plant.

 

Growth:  Very slow.

 
 It exists a form, "caespitosa", that develops multitude of outbreaks.

Culture:  Ph 6. With very good drainage to avoid flooding. Always controlled watering and to full sun exposure. It supports the cold well if it is in dry. It needs high temperatures to enter activity.

 

Phytosanitary Cares:  Preventive treatments with fungicidas to protect its heavy root. It tends to lose the root with much facility if any problem.

Other Information:  The famous “Peyote”. This cactus contains a powerful cocktail of alkaloids and it is consumed from old times in magical or sacred rituals. The experience could resemble the one of the LSD, since it contains mescaline, but other alkaloids that peyote produces affect the optical and auditory nerve, the locomotive system, the taste and sense of smell, providing mystical and remarkable experiences to those who consume it.
